Fostering a strong cluster that is a global benchmark
Biocat is the organization that coordinates and promotes the healthcare and life sciences sector in Catalonia. Its mission is to dynamize and support public and private stakeholders in the biosciences sector in Catalonia to lead and drive initiatives that reinforce research, innovation and business growth in order to make the sector a driving force for the economy of Catalonia, known worldwide.
Biocat was created in 2006 at the behest of the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council to provide a joint strategy for the Catalan biosciences sector as the foundation of a new economy based on knowledge and innovation.
Set up as a public/private foundation, the Biocat governing bodies include representatives from all levels of the BioRegion of Catalonia: companies (biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical technology and sector services), government, universities, hospitals, research centers and institutes, science parks and sector support bodies.
Biocat dynamizes the BioRegion, the biosciences cluster in Catalonia, in order to consolidate and project it internationally. Through its actions, Biocat acts as a knowledge partner for the government to design policies and programs that affect the sector; detects major international trends to anticipate the sector’s needs and opportunities before they even appear; facilitates collaboration between the stakeholders in the BioRegion and a variety of entities in Catalonia and beyond, both nationally and internationally and access of companies and research bodies to public stakeholders; proposes flexible, innovative solutions to the sector’s challenges, with quality and efficacy.
Biocat aims to become a global benchmark with the knowledge and financial capacity to head up large, strategic, countrywide projects and provide service for public and private stakeholders in the biosciences sector.
